Tucked away in a Displaced Person's camp in Germany at the end of WWII, thirteen year old Harry never dreamed of living in America. The family had lost everything— but their dream beyond all dreams came true when the U.S. President Harry Truman welcomed immigrants from the Baltic states, and the Kapeikis family set foot on American soil at New York Harbor in March, 1949. When the family arrived by train into the unfamiliar Taco-ma, they found a clean, furnished apartment and new job waiting for them. Young Harry applied himself at school and learned that he could achieve anything in the land of opportunity to drive, own a car and a home, graduate from university, and find the girl of his dreams. Beyond All Dreams is both a moving coming of age tale about a young boy's tenacity and a pictograph of life in post-war America in the 1950s.

I thought this book would be mostly about the immigrant experience. I , too, was in a DP camp in Germany but was too young to remember much. However, acclimating to America evoked many memories. In this book I was hoping to read many more of those; I was not interested in the author’s Luther League experiences.

Have you ever wondered what life is like from the inside looking out of an immigrant's eyes at the face of America? How about post-war when virtually the only thing still in your possession is the clothes on your back and hopefully your family? In his book "Beyong All Dreams-Coming of Age in Post-War America", Harry G Kapeikis was a 13 year old Latvian survivor who fled away from the Soviets and towards the U.S. and British forces that eventually placed he and his mother and father in a Displaced Persons camp in Haunstetten, Germany. It was there in 1949 that the Zion Lutheran Church working hand in hand with the Lutheran World Federation, Lutheran Hospice and Church World Service welcomed the Kapeikis' family to Tacoma, WA, an apartment, and a job.

Life was turned upside down for this family--but in a good way--as Harry, the youngster, quickly discovers he would be the one with the greater command of the English language to guide the family, answer all the questions, and field the myriad of social complexities in this new land. Fortunately, they had a good, strong network in the Lutheran Church who would eventually become an extended family in their resettlement efforts.

Harry (Harij in the old country) narrates this coming of age memoir as he rises through the school system, learns to drive and own a car, graduate from a university and finds the girl of his dreams, and own a home as well as his own business. Truly the land of opportunities where if you dream it and work hard enough, your dreams can come true. Sweet, emotional autobiography following his first work, "Exile From Latavia".
I thought this book would be mostly about the immigrant experience. I , too, was in a DP camp in Germany but was too young to remember much. However, acclimating to America evoked many memories. In this book I was hoping to read many more of those; I was not interested in the author’s Luther League experiences.
